About the Seiko 5 Sports Automatic GMT Men's Watch (SSK001)
The SSK001 is the Seiko 5 Sports GMT: an automatic watch with a fourth hand that tracks a second time zone against the 24-hour bezel. The 42.5 mm steel case borrows the lines of Seiko's old SKX divers, with a black dial, LumiBrite hands and markers, a red-tipped GMT hand and a magnified date at 3 o'clock.
Inside is Seiko's 4R34 automatic, a caller-style GMT that hand-winds, hacks and runs for about 41 hours off the wrist; the GMT hand is set independently. A see-through screw-down caseback shows the movement. Hardlex crystal covers the dial, and water resistance is 100 m, fine for swimming though not diving.
It comes on a five-row Jubilee-style stainless steel bracelet with a push-button tri-fold clasp. The case is 13.6 mm thick and 46 mm lug to lug, so it wears smaller than the diameter suggests.
What reviewers say
Enthusiast reviews are warm. Watch Clicker calls it an affordable GMT with an in-house movement that it simply cannot find reasons to dislike, praising the compact lug-to-lug, a friction bezel that fixes Seiko's alignment issues, the clean dial and finishing, and a GMT hand that clears the markers; its gripes were a GMT hand misaligned out of the box, an unlumed bezel, no day display and a bezel that usually reads all black. Fifth Wrist found the Jubilee bracelet comfortable and the value superb, with the stamped clasp acceptable at the price, but notes it is a hefty presence on the wrist. Exquisite Timepieces likewise frames it as the affordable mechanical GMT. Owners report accuracy of roughly +4 to +20 seconds a day.
