About the Sonos Beam Soundbar
Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is a compact smart soundbar that brings Dolby Atmos to living rooms, bedrooms and other smaller spaces. Its processor is 40% faster than before, which Sonos uses to create two extra audio paths for a virtual surround effect, so sound seems to move around and above you without extra speakers.
Dialogue is a strength. The bar was fine-tuned with help from Oscar-winning sound engineers, and Speech Enhancement in the Sonos app makes whispers and busy action scenes easier to follow. Night Sound lowers loud effects and lifts quieter ones for late-night viewing, and Trueplay tuning adapts the sound to your room's acoustics.
Setup needs just two cables, with step-by-step guidance in the Sonos app. The precisely perforated white grille blends in whether the bar sits on furniture or is mounted on the wall. It's also a capable music speaker, streaming from your favorite services in detailed stereo with support for Dolby Atmos Music, and it supports voice control.
What reviewers say
Reviewers regard the Beam (Gen 2) as one of the best compact soundbars for smaller rooms and TVs, praising its full, clear sound, strong dialogue and simple setup. The usual caveats are that its virtual Atmos gives only a modest sense of height, bass is limited without a Sonos Sub, and it has a single HDMI port with no passthrough.
Pros
- Rich, clear sound for its size
- Excellent dialogue clarity
- Compact, attractive and easy to set up
- Strong streaming and multi-room features
Cons
- Virtual Atmos height effects are subtle
- Bass is modest without a subwoofer
- One HDMI port and no passthrough
