About the Boss Katana-50 Gen 3 50-Watt 1x12 Combo Guitar Amplifier
The Boss Katana-50 Gen 3 is the third generation of Boss's long-running Katana modeling amp series, packing 50 watts and a single 12-inch speaker into a combo that suits home practice, rehearsals and smaller gigs. Updated Tube Logic voicing is designed to give a responsive, tube-like feel.
Gen 3 refines the Katana's amp characters, including the high-gain Brown voice, and adds a new Pushed character for players who like a clean tone that is just starting to break up. Built-in effects cover Booster, Mod, FX, Delay and Reverb categories, with dozens of effect types available to choose from. The redesigned Boss Tone Studio app for macOS and Windows makes deeper editing of amps and effects simpler, and an optional Bluetooth MIDI adapter adds sound editing and music streaming from iOS and Android devices.
It suits guitarists who want one amp that covers practice, rehearsals and smaller shows without needing a pile of pedals, from beginners building their sound to experienced players who want a versatile combo.
What reviewers say
Reviewers treat the Katana-50 Gen 3 as a careful refinement of an already popular practice and small-gig amp rather than a reinvention. Guitar World and MusicRadar both praise its brighter, punchier amp tones, familiar control layout and the new Pushed clean voice, and owners like how much the built-in effects cut down on extra pedals. The main criticisms are that Bluetooth needs a separately sold adapter, there is no effects loop on this model, and deeper editing relies on the computer app, which some owners find fiddly to set up.
Pros
- Brighter, punchier amp tones than earlier Katanas
- New Pushed character adds a useful edge-of-breakup clean sound
- Built-in effects reduce the need for extra pedals
- Familiar, easy-to-use control layout
Cons
- Bluetooth requires a separately purchased adapter
- No effects loop on the Katana-50
- Deeper editing relies on the Boss Tone Studio app, which some owners find fiddly to set up
