About the Roland FP-30X 88-Key Digital Piano
The Roland FP-30X is a portable 88-key digital piano designed to feel and sound like an acoustic instrument while fitting easily into a living room, studio or classroom. Its PHA-4 Standard keyboard combines hammer action, escapement and ivory-feel key surfaces for a touch modeled on a good acoustic piano, with plenty of room for your technique to grow.
Roland's SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine responds to subtle changes in how you play, and 256-note polyphony gives plenty of room for sustained passages. Beyond pianos you get 56 tones in total, including electric pianos, organs and strings, with layering, split and a built-in metronome. Two downward-facing speakers powered by 11 watts each handle home practice, and dual headphone outputs make lessons and late-night playing easy.
Connectivity is a big part of its appeal. Bluetooth audio streams music through the piano so you can play along, Bluetooth MIDI links to apps such as Roland's Piano Every Day, Zenbeats or GarageBand, and USB carries audio and MIDI to a computer for recording. A sustain pedal and music rest are included, and the optional KSC-70 stand and KPD-70 three-pedal unit create a more furniture-style setup.
What reviewers say
Reviewers and owners praise the FP-30X's PHA-4 keyboard and rich SuperNATURAL piano sound, and Pianist's Compass sees it as an excellent home-practice piano. It is also generally viewed as a meaningful step up from the original FP-30, thanks to higher polyphony, extra tones and Bluetooth audio. The common criticisms are that the built-in speakers are modest for bigger rooms or band settings, there is no display screen, and there are no onboard rhythm patterns without using an app.
Pros
- Realistic-feeling PHA-4 action with escapement
- Rich, expressive SuperNATURAL piano sound
- Bluetooth audio/MIDI and USB make app and computer use easy
- Meaningful upgrades over the original FP-30
Cons
- Speakers are fine at home but limited for larger rooms or gigs
- No display screen, so some settings rely on button combinations or apps
- Fewer extra features than more versatile keyboards
