About the Apple AirPods Max (USB-C)
AirPods Max (USB-C) are Apple's over-ear noise-cancelling headphones, in the version with a USB-C port for charging and wired lossless audio. Each ear cup has an Apple-designed dynamic driver and an H1 chip, and nine microphones in total handle Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode and voice pickup.
Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and Adaptive EQ shape the sound, while the Digital Crown takes care of volume, playback, calls and Siri, with a separate button for switching listening modes. Battery life is rated at up to 20 hours with noise cancellation on, and five minutes of charging gives about an hour and a half of listening. The included Smart Case puts the headphones into an ultra-low-power state when they're stored.
They suit iPhone, iPad and Mac users who want premium over-ear headphones for travel, work and home listening, with the option of plugging in over USB-C for lossless playback.
What reviewers say
Reviewers rank the AirPods Max's noise cancelling and Transparency mode among the best available, and like the sturdy metal build, comfortable ear pads and clean, low-distortion sound. Battery life matched Apple's 20-hour rating in testing, and the USB-C model allows wired lossless listening with a Mac or iPhone. Common complaints are the weight, a Smart Case that offers little protection, no power button, and features that work fully only on Apple devices.
Pros
- Excellent noise cancelling and one of the best transparency modes
- Sturdy metal build with comfortable ear pads and a fabric headband
- Clean, low-distortion sound, with lossless listening possible over USB-C
- Battery life met Apple's 20-hour rating in testing
Cons
- Heavy at around 385 g compared with most rivals
- Smart Case offers little protection, and there's no power button
- No 3.5 mm jack or high-res Bluetooth codecs, and features are limited on Android
