About the Canon EOS R8 Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Body
The Canon EOS R8 puts a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and Canon's DIGIC X processor into one of the brand's lightest full-frame mirrorless bodies. It is designed for enthusiasts, content creators and travelers who want full-frame image quality without the bulk of a larger camera.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II handles focusing, with subject detection for people, animals and vehicles. The electronic shutter supports bursts of up to 40 fps for fast-moving moments, while video shooters get oversampled 4K UHD at up to 60p and Full HD at up to 180 fps for slow-motion clips. A vari-angle touchscreen makes it easier to frame from awkward angles or film yourself.
Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth help with sharing and remote control, and the RF mount works with Canon's RF and RF-S lenses, so you can build your kit over time. It is a good match for street, travel and everyday shooting where size and weight matter.
What reviewers say
RTINGS, DPReview and TechRadar praise the R8 for full-frame image quality with wide dynamic range, dependable subject-tracking autofocus and oversampled 4K video in a notably small body. The most consistent complaint is short battery life, and reviewers also note the lack of in-body stabilization, only limited weather sealing, and recording limits and heat that can cut long 4K 60p sessions short.
Pros
- Excellent image quality and dynamic range
- Capable subject-tracking autofocus
- Light and compact for a full-frame camera
- Oversampled 4K video and a fully articulating screen
Cons
- Short battery life, especially when shooting video
- No in-body image stabilization and only limited weather sealing
- Recording limits and heat can interrupt long 4K 60p clips
