About the Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
Steam Deck OLED is Valve's handheld gaming console for playing your games away from the desk. As the name suggests, the big change is the HDR OLED display, which is designed for gaming and delivers more colors, pure blacks, striking contrast and a larger picture than the original LCD model. This version comes with 1TB of storage, and expandable storage means you can add more later.
Valve also refreshed the internals. A more efficient AMD APU and 30-50% more battery life than the LCD model give you more time between charges, while a bigger fan and updated thermals help it run cooler. Wi-Fi 6E brings faster downloads and steadier online play, and Bluetooth is built in as well.
It's a good match for PC gamers who want to keep playing on the couch, in bed or while traveling, and for anyone who wants a dedicated handheld for their game library. The OLED model is also about 30g lighter than the LCD version.
What reviewers say
Reviewers generally consider the OLED model the best version of the Steam Deck, singling out the vivid HDR OLED screen, longer battery life than the original, faster Wi-Fi and cooler, quieter running. The main criticisms are that performance is essentially unchanged from the LCD model, so demanding newer games can struggle and rival Windows handhelds are more powerful, and that battery life is still short in heavy games. Running non-Steam games also remains fiddly.
Pros
- Vivid HDR OLED screen is a clear upgrade over the LCD model
- Noticeably better battery life than the original Steam Deck
- Runs cooler and quieter, with faster Wi-Fi 6E downloads
- Slightly lighter than the original model
Cons
- Performance is essentially unchanged from the LCD model, so demanding recent games may not run smoothly
- Battery life is still short in demanding games
- Installing and running non-Steam games remains awkward
