About the Microsoft Xbox Series X
The Xbox Series X Digital Edition is the full-power Series X without a disc drive, in the Robot White finish. Inside it is the same hardware as every Series X: a 12-teraflop GPU, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and the custom SSD behind the Xbox Velocity Architecture, so games load fast, run at up to 4K and 120 frames per second, and Quick Resume lets you hop between several suspended games in seconds.
Games come from the Xbox Store or Game Pass, which puts hundreds of titles, including Microsoft's own on release day, into one subscription. It plays thousands of Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games too, many with auto HDR and higher frame rates.
A matching Robot White Xbox Wireless Controller is in the box. Storage can be expanded with an official expansion card, and the console supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, VRR and 4K Blu-ray-free streaming from the usual apps.
What reviewers say
Reviewers see the Digital Edition as the Series X for people who already buy everything on the Xbox Store or play through Game Pass: identical speed, loading and image quality to the disc model, in a white finish many prefer. The trade-offs are the obvious one, no discs so no second-hand or lent games and no 4K Blu-ray playback, and a launch price that sat uncomfortably close to the disc version. Game Pass and backwards compatibility remain the big draws of the platform.
Pros
- Same performance as the disc Series X, including Quick Resume and fast loading
- Game Pass gives a large library without buying games individually
- Wide backwards compatibility with older Xbox games
- Clean Robot White design with a matching controller
Cons
- No disc drive: no second-hand or disc games, no Blu-ray films
- Little saving over the disc model at launch
- Storage expansion cards are costly
