About the Microsoft Xbox Series X
The Galaxy Black Special Edition is the top Xbox Series X: the disc model with double the storage, finished in a black speckled with green, blue and purple flecks, and a matching Galaxy Black controller in the box. The 2TB SSD holds twice as many games as the standard console before you need an expansion card.
Performance is Series X through and through: a 12-teraflop GPU, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and the Xbox Velocity Architecture for fast loading, games at up to 4K and 120 frames per second, ray tracing, and Quick Resume to jump between suspended games. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray drive plays disc games and films, and the console runs thousands of Xbox One, 360 and original Xbox titles.
Game Pass adds a library of games, including Microsoft's own on launch day, and the console supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and VRR on compatible TVs.
What reviewers say
Coverage of the Galaxy Black edition says what you would expect: it is the standard Series X experience, which reviewers still rate as fast, quiet and well built, with the storage and finish being the reasons to pay more. The extra terabyte matters because Series X games are large and official expansion cards are expensive, so 2TB inside the box is good value against adding a card later. The flecked finish divides opinion in photos but is subtle in person. As with every Series X, the criticisms are about the platform rather than the hardware: fewer exclusives than PlayStation, and the best value depends on paying for Game Pass.
Pros
- 2TB of built-in storage, avoiding a pricey expansion card
- Full Series X performance with the disc drive
- Distinctive finish with a matching controller
- Quiet, fast and reliable hardware with wide backwards compatibility
Cons
- Pricier than the 1TB models
- No performance difference from the standard Series X
- Platform leans on Game Pass for value
