About the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen)
The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) is a Wi-Fi smart thermostat that builds its own schedule. Over time it learns the temperatures you like when you are home and turns itself down when you are away, so you do not have to program it by hand.
You can adjust the temperature with the dial on the thermostat or from your phone, laptop or tablet, and check Energy History to see how much energy you have been using. It works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for voice control and is Energy Star certified. Compared with earlier Nest models, this generation is thinner and has a bigger, sharper display.
It suits homeowners with compatible HVAC systems, including heat pumps, who want a set-it-and-forget-it thermostat. The box includes a trim plate, mounting hardware and a screwdriver; the Nest Power Connector is sold separately if your system needs one. Check your system's compatibility before ordering.
What reviewers say
Reviewers have long praised the 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat for its premium design, large sharp display and useful learning and auto-away features. The main criticisms are its price, schedule programming that can feel more complicated than it should, and learning features that matter less if someone is home most of the time; it also lacks Apple HomeKit and Siri support.
Pros
- Premium design with a solid, satisfying dial
- Large, sharp display that is readable from across the room
- Learns your habits and builds a schedule automatically
- Works with both Alexa and Google Assistant
Cons
- Expensive compared with simpler smart thermostats
- Manual schedule programming can feel complicated
- No Siri or Apple HomeKit support
