About the Aventon Level 3 Commuter Electric Bike
The Aventon Level 3 is a commuter e-bike equipped for daily riding, with fenders, a rear rack, integrated lights, a suspension fork and a suspension seatpost included. A 36V rear hub motor rated at 500W sustained (864W peak) with 60Nm of torque runs from a removable 733Wh battery (36V, 20Ah, LG 21700 cells), with an estimated range of up to 70 miles per charge.
It ships as a Class 2 e-bike, with throttle and pedal assist up to 20 mph. A double-sided bottom bracket torque sensor matches assist to how hard you pedal, and the three assist levels can be fine-tuned with Ride Tune in the Aventon app. Ride information appears on the Aventon BC280 display.
Built-in Aventon Control Unit (ACU) electronics add 4G and GPS connectivity for location tracking, geofencing, an alarm with motion sensing, remote shutdown, status reports and ride statistics through the app. Aventon includes the 4G service free for the first year after registration; a paid subscription is needed after that.
The 6061 aluminum frame comes in step-over and step-through styles, each in Regular and Large sizes, covering riders from 4'11" to 6'4". Comfort comes from an 80mm coil fork with lockout, a 50mm-travel suspension seatpost, an adjustable stem and 27.5 x 2.2-inch Kenda tires. Hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors and an 8-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain complete the build. The bike weighs 67 lbs, carries up to 300 lbs in total and up to 60 lbs on the rack, and is UL 2849 certified, with the battery certified to UL 2271.
What reviewers say
OutdoorGearLab named the Level 3 its top pick for commuting, and Electric Bike Report calls it one of the best commuter e-bikes on the market. Testers praise the responsive torque sensor, a motor that feels stronger than its 500W rating (OutdoorGearLab measured about 890 peak watts on a dyno), sporty yet stable handling and the comfort of the suspension fork and seatpost. Range beat Aventon's claim in Electric Bike Report's tests (44.2 miles in Turbo, 80.6 miles in Eco); OutdoorGearLab covered 38.1 miles with over 1,900 feet of climbing. The 4G/GPS security features are a highlight. Complaints: the tail lights did not work as brake lights on tested bikes, the brake levers have a long pull and felt flexy, the headlight is dim for dark roads, and the charging port sits awkwardly under the downtube.
Pros
- Responsive torque sensor and a motor that feels stronger than its rating
- Range beat Aventon's 70-mile claim in Electric Bike Report's Eco test
- 4G/GPS security features (tracking, geofencing, alarm) stand out at this level
- Suspension fork and seatpost make for a comfortable ride
- Fenders, rear rack and lights come standard
Cons
- Tail lights did not function as brake lights on reviewed bikes
- Brake levers have a long pull and felt flexy to testers
- Headlight is dim for unlit roads
- Charging port is awkwardly placed under the downtube
