About the Aventon Pace 500.3 Step-Through Electric Bike
The Aventon Pace 500.3 Step-Through is an upright, cruiser-style e-bike with a low step-through frame, swept-back handlebars and a cushioned saddle. A 48V brushless rear hub motor rated at 500W sustained (864W peak) is powered by a 614Wh battery (48V, 12.8Ah, LG cells), with an estimated range of up to 60 miles.
Out of the box it is a Class 2 e-bike, with throttle and pedal assist up to 20 mph. It can be unlocked to Class 3, raising pedal-assist speed to 28 mph, while the throttle stays limited to 20 mph. The bike also runs with the throttle unplugged and removed, for areas where throttles are not allowed. A double-sided bottom bracket torque sensor scales assist to your pedaling effort across four levels: Eco, Tour, Sport and Turbo.
Integrated front and rear lights include turn signals, and a backlit color LCD shows ride information and syncs with the Aventon app. Hydraulic disc brakes, an 8-speed Shimano drivetrain with a 12-32T cassette and 48T chainring, and 27.5 x 2.1-inch puncture-resistant tires with reflective sidewalls complete the build. The aluminum fork is rigid, with no suspension.
The step-through frame comes in Regular and Large sizes for riders from 4'11" to 6'1". The bike weighs 54 lbs with the battery, supports up to 300 lbs in total and includes a rear-mount kickstand; fenders and a rear rack are compatible but not included. Aventon rates the bike IPX4, so it can handle light rain and road spray, but it should not be pressure-washed, left in prolonged rain or submerged.
What reviewers say
Electric Bike Report tested both the step-over and step-through Pace 500.3 and concluded that the switch to a torque sensor clearly improves on the previous model, giving a more natural, responsive ride and better efficiency. In its range tests the step-through covered 67.8 miles in Eco and 35.2 miles in Turbo, beyond Aventon's 60-mile claim. Reviewers like the relatively light weight for lifting onto a rack, the upright cruiser position and the seat-stay turn signals, which Electrek also highlighted at launch for being widely spaced and easy for drivers to read. Downsides: throttle-only hill climbing was slower than many rivals, the rear wheel could skid under hard braking, the LCD is hard to read in direct sun, the rigid frame and fork pass along road bumps, and fenders and a rack are not included.
Pros
- Torque sensor gives a natural, responsive ride and better efficiency
- Tested range beat Aventon's 60-mile claim in Eco mode
- Relatively light for an e-bike, so easier to lift and handle
- Widely spaced turn signals improve visibility in traffic
- Comfortable upright riding position and easy step-through access
Cons
- Throttle-only hill climbing slower than many comparable bikes
- Rear wheel can skid under hard braking
- Display is hard to read in direct sunlight
- Rigid frame and fork transmit road bumps
- Fenders and rear rack not included
