About the Ooni Karu 12 Multi-Fuel Portable Pizza Oven
Ooni Karu 12 is a compact outdoor pizza oven that burns real wood or charcoal for a smoky, wood-fired bake. It is listed with a maximum temperature of 500°C and a preheat time of about 15 minutes to reach 450°C (850°F), after which it can turn out a 12-inch stone-baked pizza in around 60 seconds.
The stainless steel body is insulated with ceramic fiber, and a thick cordierite baking stone inside holds heat between pizzas. A removable chimney with an adjustable vent lets you manage airflow, and the custom fuel tray is designed to feed a strong flame across the oven. If you would rather cook with propane some nights, the oven works with the separately sold Ooni Gas Burner.
At 26.4 lb (12 kg) with non-slip feet, it is light enough to move around a patio or pack for a trip. That makes it a good fit for home cooks trying a pizza oven for the first time as well as keen hobbyists chasing Neapolitan-style pies.
What reviewers say
TechRadar calls the Karu 12 an excellent first pizza oven: it is light and portable, turns out 12-inch pizzas in a couple of minutes for most home cooks, and lets you switch between wood and gas. The trade-offs are that output slows after four or five pizzas while the stone reheats, the gas burner is an extra purchase, wood firing takes practice to keep temperatures up, and the metal exterior gets hot.
Pros
- Cooks pizzas in minutes once the stone is hot
- Light and easy to move
- Flexible wood, charcoal or gas fuel
- Good value as a first pizza oven
Cons
- Slow for more than about five pizzas
- Gas burner is an extra purchase
- Metal exterior gets very hot
