About the YETI Tundra 65 Hard Cooler
The YETI Tundra 65 is a mid-size hard cooler that YETI calls its most versatile, equally at home on a fishing boat, at a hunting camp or beside the backyard barbecue. It holds up to 77 cans or 58 pounds of ice (when filled with only one or the other), and YETI sizes it for a weekend camping trip for four.
Cold retention comes from the FatWall design, which holds up to three inches of pressure-injected PermaFrost polyurethane insulation, plus a freezer-quality ColdLock gasket and an Interlock lid system. The rotomolded shell is built for hard use, with T-Rex lid latches and a two-pin NeverFail hinge. It's also certified bear-resistant by the IGBC when secured with the padlocks YETI specifies.
Everyday details include DoubleHaul rope handles, LipGrip handles, BearFoot non-slip feet, AnchorPoint tie-down slots for boats and truck beds, and a Vortex drain for quick emptying. A removable dry goods basket is included, and the cooler is dry-ice compatible. It weighs about 30.3 pounds empty.
What reviewers say
Reviewers at OutdoorGearLab, CleverHiker and Task & Purpose, along with REI shoppers, praise the Tundra 65's extremely rugged build and practical touches such as the rope handles, non-slip feet and drain, and found it keeps ice for several days, enough for a long weekend or more. The main reservations are the premium price, the weight once it's loaded, and that it holds less than its size suggests, with OutdoorGearLab rating its ice retention behind some rival premium coolers.
Pros
- Keeps ice for several days, enough for a long weekend or more
- Extremely tough rotomolded construction
- Comfortable rope handles and non-slip feet
- Lid still opens when the cooler is strapped down in a truck bed
Cons
- Expensive compared with most coolers
- Heavy, and hard to move alone once loaded
- Holds less than its size suggests, and ice retention trails some rivals in side-by-side tests
