About the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is Samsung's new wide foldable, a separate model from the taller Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Closed, it is short and wide, close to the size of a passport, with a 5.5-inch cover screen. Open, it has a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display in a 4:3 shape (1848 x 2448), which suits video, reading and running three apps side by side. Both screens run at 1–120Hz, and the main screen reaches 3,000 nits peak brightness. Samsung's Flex Titanium display structure makes the crease less visible. At 201 g it is Samsung's lightest Galaxy Z Fold so far, and it is 9.7 mm thick folded and 4.5 mm open.

It runs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, on Android 17 with One UI 9 and Galaxy AI, with seven years of Android and security updates. The 4,800mAh battery supports 45W wired charging (up to 63% in about 30 minutes with a 45W adapter, sold separately), 20W wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare.

The rear cameras are a 50MP main camera (f/1.8, OIS) with 2x optical-quality zoom and a 50MP ultra-wide; there is no telephoto camera. It records 8K video at 30fps and supports LOG recording with LUTs, and each screen has a 10MP selfie camera. The phone is rated IP48 and has an Armor Aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the cover screen and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back. The hinge does not hold the phone partly open, so there is no Flex Mode, and the S Pen is not supported. The box includes a USB-C cable but no charger.

What reviewers say

Reviewers like the new wide design. The Verge said the passport-sized Z Fold8 feels natural after a week and its 4:3 inner screen suits reading and video; What Hi-Fi? gave it five stars for its bright, contrast-rich display. Android Central found it thin, light and easy to pocket, The Verge and How-To Geek said the crease is much less visible, and GSMArena and How-To Geek found performance smooth and battery life good for a full day. The main complaint is the cameras: there is no telephoto, and The Verge and GSMArena found the 50MP main camera ordinary for the price. Android Central and GSMArena noted heat and throttling under sustained loads, some apps scale awkwardly on the short cover screen, there is no Flex Mode, IP48 offers limited dust protection, and How-To Geek called the $1,900 price a tough sell.

Pros

  • Compact, passport-sized body that is easy to pocket and comfortable for two-handed typing
  • 4:3 inner screen suits video, reading and three apps side by side, with a barely visible crease
  • Battery lasts a full day for reviewers, with faster 45W wired charging than the Z Fold7
  • Flagship Snapdragon performance and Samsung's multitasking software, with seven years of updates

Cons

  • No telephoto camera, and reviewers found the 50MP main camera ordinary for the price
  • Gets warm and throttles in long gaming sessions; no Flex Mode because the hinge does not hold partial angles
  • IP48 rating gives limited dust protection; some apps scale awkwardly on the short cover screen
