About the Garmin Forerunner 970 GPS Running Smartwatch, Soft Gold Titanium with French Gray/Translucent Indigo Band
The Garmin Forerunner 970 is a premium GPS running and triathlon smartwatch. This version pairs a soft gold titanium bezel with a French gray case and a French gray/translucent indigo silicone band. It has a bright 1.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen (454 x 454 pixels) with an optional always-on mode, protected by a sapphire crystal lens.
For training, it offers multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology and full-color built-in maps, along with training readiness and training status, sleep score, all-day stress, Body Battery energy monitoring and Pulse Ox. A built-in LED flashlight helps on early or late runs, and a speaker and microphone let you use voice features, including calls and texts by voice through a paired compatible phone. It also supports Garmin Pay, music storage and the Garmin ECG app where available, with 32 GB of memory.
Battery life is rated at up to 15 days in smartwatch mode and up to 26 hours in GPS-only mode. The 47 x 47 x 12.9 mm case weighs 56 g, takes 22 mm QuickFit bands and has a 5 ATM water rating. It suits dedicated runners and triathletes who want detailed training data.
What reviewers say
Reviewers rate the Forerunner 970 as one of Garmin's most complete running watches, praising its bright AMOLED display and sapphire lens, accurate multi-band GPS with clearer maps, the handy built-in flashlight and deep training metrics. The main criticisms are the high price, battery life that falls short of its predecessor, some advanced running stats requiring a separate chest strap, and a 5 ATM water rating that is lower than Garmin's Fenix line.
Pros
- Bright AMOLED display with a tough sapphire lens
- Accurate multi-band GPS and clearer full-color maps
- Built-in LED flashlight
- Deep training metrics for runners and triathletes
Cons
- Expensive
- Shorter battery life than the Forerunner 965
- Some advanced metrics need a Garmin HRM 600 chest strap
