About the Apple Watch Ultra 4 (49mm, GPS + Cellular)

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is Apple's largest and toughest watch: a 49mm Grade 5 titanium case in natural or black, a flat sapphire crystal and an Always-On Retina display rated at 3,000 nits that uses wide-angle OLEDs and LTPO3 to drop to 1Hz. It is water resistant to 100 metres, rated for recreational scuba diving to 40 metres and IP6X dust resistant.

Battery life is up to 50 hours in normal use, 84 hours in Low Power Mode and up to 45 hours with Max Extended Workout; a fast charge gives 80% in about 45 minutes. Inside is the S11 chip with 64GB of storage, 5G RedCap cellular, dual-frequency GPS and satellite connectivity for Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My when there is no signal.

Health sensors include a second-generation electrical heart sensor, an optical heart sensor now sampled every five seconds in the background, blood oxygen, temperature, depth gauge and water temperature, supporting features such as hypertension notifications, Sleep Score and a readiness score in watchOS. A band and a 1m Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C cable are in the box.

What reviewers say

Reviews are positive, with the gains in battery and health tracking winning more praise than the unchanged design. Tom's Guide, which ran 22 miles with it, calls it Apple's most competitive endurance wearable yet, and Mashable got roughly three days per charge. Reviewers highlight background heart rate readings every five seconds instead of every five minutes and a long-overdue readiness score (Expert Reviews), and Consumer Reports found heart rate and pulse oximeter readings excellent and accurate. The complaints: Trusted Reviews and Gizmodo say the design is basically identical to the Ultra 3 and getting stale, Expert Reviews says it is no Garmin for stamina, the Audio Intelligence features were not available at review time, and Ultra 3 owners have little reason to upgrade.

Pros

  • Best battery life of any Apple Watch: 50 hours rated, about three days in Mashable's testing
  • Much denser heart rate data (every five seconds) plus a readiness score
  • Accurate heart rate and blood oxygen measurements (Consumer Reports)
  • Toughest Apple Watch: 100m water resistance, diving support, satellite SOS

Cons

  • Design is essentially unchanged from the Ultra 3, and the 49mm case is big for smaller wrists
  • Still well short of Garmin rivals for endurance
  • Audio Intelligence features were not available at launch; little reason for Ultra 3 owners to upgrade
