About the Sony BRAVIA 8 55" 4K OLED Smart TV
The Sony BRAVIA 8 is a 55-inch 4K OLED smart TV with more than 8 million self-lit pixels for deep blacks and vivid color. Sony's XR processor fine-tunes each scene, the TV handles Dolby Vision and HDR10 content, and it automatically removes judder from 24p film sources. It suits movie nights in a dim room as well as console gaming, with VRR support and Auto HDR Tone Mapping that works with Sony's console.
Google TV puts streaming apps like Netflix and Sony Pictures Core in one place, and Google Assistant voice control works through the included voice remote. You can also cast from your phone with AirPlay 2 or Chromecast, and Bluetooth is built in.
Built-in actuators and tweeters deliver Dolby Atmos sound, and Voice Zoom 3 helps dialogue come through clearly. The stand can raise the screen up to two inches to make room for a slim soundbar, and the TV also has four HDMI ports and an ATSC 3.0 tuner.
What reviewers say
Reviewers praise the BRAVIA 8 for a balanced, lifelike picture with deep blacks and good cleanup of low-quality video, and What Hi-Fi? rated its built-in sound highly for a TV. The most consistent criticism is that only two of its four HDMI ports support 4K/120Hz. It is also not as bright as some rival OLEDs, and direct reflections can be noticeable in bright rooms.
Pros
- Natural, lifelike color and deep blacks with no blooming
- Strong upscaling and cleanup of low-quality content
- Good built-in sound for a TV
- Polished Google TV interface, well-designed remote and ATSC 3.0 tuner
Cons
- Only two HDMI ports support 4K/120Hz
- Not as bright as competing OLEDs
- Direct reflections are visible in bright rooms
