About the Microsoft Xbox Series S
The Xbox Series S is the small, all-digital Xbox, and this Carbon Black model doubles the storage to 1TB. It plays the same games as the Series X, aimed at 1440p rather than native 4K, with up to 120 frames per second, ray tracing, fast loading from the custom SSD and Quick Resume for switching between suspended games.
Games come from the Xbox Store or Game Pass, which includes Microsoft's own releases on day one, and the console runs thousands of Xbox One, 360 and original Xbox games. It upscales to 4K TVs and supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, VRR and the usual streaming apps.
At roughly 60% smaller than the Series X it fits almost anywhere, standing or lying flat, and a Carbon Black Xbox Wireless Controller is in the box.
What reviewers say
Reviewers like the Series S as the affordable, tiny way into current-generation Xbox games, and the 1TB model fixes their main complaint about the original, which filled its 512GB after a handful of installs. Loading, Quick Resume and Game Pass all work as on the Series X. The limits are clear: it is a 1440p console, some demanding games run at lower resolutions or frame rates than on Series X, and with no disc drive everything has to be bought digitally.
Pros
- Small, quiet and easy to fit under any TV
- 1TB of storage instead of 512GB
- Fast loading and Quick Resume like the Series X
- Game Pass and backwards compatibility
Cons
- Targets 1440p, not native 4K; demanding games are cut back
- No disc drive, so no second-hand or disc games
- Less future-proof than a Series X
