About the Microsoft Xbox Series S
The Xbox Series S is Microsoft's compact, all-digital current-generation console. It has no disc drive, so games are downloaded or streamed rather than played from discs, and that keeps the console small enough to fit almost anywhere around a TV.
Under the hood is a custom AMD processor with eight Zen 2 cores, RDNA 2 graphics rated at 4 teraflops and 10GB of GDDR6 memory. It games at up to 1440p resolution, supports frame rates up to 120 FPS, and works with Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI variable refresh rate and AMD FreeSync on compatible displays, along with Dolby Atmos audio. A custom NVMe SSD keeps load times short, and you can add room for more games with a Storage Expansion Card or a USB 3.1 external drive (both sold separately).
In the box you get the console, an Xbox Wireless Controller, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and a power cord. It is a good fit for digital-first players and families, and anyone who wants a second console for a bedroom or dorm.
What reviewers say
Reviewers like the Series S as a compact, quiet and lower-cost way into current-generation Xbox gaming, with fast loading from its SSD and noticeable upgrades for many older Xbox games. The trade-offs they point to are lower visual quality than the Series X in the newest, most demanding games, limited usable storage on the base model with pricey expansion cards, and no disc drive for buying or playing physical games.
Pros
- Small, clean design that fits easily under a TV
- Quiet in use
- Fast load times thanks to the NVMe SSD
- Older Xbox games often look and run better
Cons
- Can't match Series X visual quality in demanding new games
- Usable storage on the base model fills up fast, and expansion cards are expensive
- No disc drive, so physical and pre-owned games are out
