About the HP OMEN 16 Gaming Laptop – AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5070, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 16" 2.5K 240Hz, Shadow Black
The 2025 HP OMEN 16 (16-ap0000 series) is a 16-inch gaming laptop. This configuration pairs the AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU (8GB GDDR7), 16GB of DDR5 memory and a 512GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD, and uses the top display option HP offers on this model: a 16-inch 2.5K WQXGA (2560 x 1600) IPS panel with a 240Hz refresh rate. It runs Windows 11 and is aimed at players who want a 16-core processor and RTX 50-series graphics behind a sharp, fast screen.
The Ryzen 9 8940HX has 16 cores and 32 threads, up to 5.3GHz max boost clock and 64MB of L3 cache. The 16:10 display has an anti-glare finish, a 60–240Hz refresh range, 3ms response time, 500 nits brightness and 100% sRGB coverage. Memory uses two slots, and the SSD sits in one of two M.2 slots (HP notes the second runs at PCIe Gen4 x2 speed), leaving room to add storage later.
Ports include one USB Type-C at 10Gbps (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4 and HP Sleep and Charge), one USB Type-A at 10Gbps, two USB Type-A at 5Gbps, HDMI 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet and a headphone/mic combo jack. There is also a 1080p FHD camera with a privacy shutter, dual speakers tuned by HyperX with DTS:X Ultra, a full-size backlit keyboard with numeric keypad, and a 6-cell 83Wh battery that HP says can fast-charge to about 50% in 30 minutes with the laptop shut down. It weighs about 5.4 pounds.
In the box: the laptop and a 230W AC power adapter.
What reviewers say
LaptopMedia tested an OMEN 16 (16-ap0000) with the Ryzen 9 8940HX and RTX 5070 and singled out its cooling: the system stayed cool, quiet and stable, with consistent gaming performance and no throttling. It liked the two memory slots and two M.2 slots (one takes only short 2230 drives), the rear-mounted ports and the webcam privacy shutter, but disliked the half-height up and down arrow keys and recorded about 4.5 hours of video playback. Notebookcheck gave an 8940HX version with an RTX 5060 83%, praising the design, keyboard, touchpad, CPU/GPU performance and cool surface temperatures, while noting fingerprint-prone surfaces, no USB4, Thunderbolt or SD reader, and ads in the control center app. Both reviewers' display complaints concern the base 1920 x 1200 144Hz panel, not the 2560 x 1600 240Hz screen on this model.
Pros
- Cool, quiet and stable under sustained load (LaptopMedia)
- Consistent gaming performance with no throttling
- Two memory slots and two M.2 slots for upgrades
- Solid keyboard and touchpad (Notebookcheck)
- Rear-mounted ports help keep cables tidy
- Physical webcam privacy shutter
Cons
- Half-height up and down arrow keys
- Second M.2 slot only takes short 2230 drives
- No USB4, Thunderbolt or SD card reader
- Fingerprint-prone surfaces (Notebookcheck)
- Control center software shows ads (Notebookcheck)
- About 4.5 hours of video playback in LaptopMedia's test
