About the Sony PlayStation 5
This is the current PlayStation 5 with the disc drive: the slimmer 2023 design, about 30% smaller than the launch console, with a 1TB SSD and an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive that plays disc games and 4K films. Buying games on disc, lending them and picking up second-hand titles all work, as does the PlayStation Store.
The hardware is the same PS5 experience: fast loading from the custom SSD, 4K output at up to 120Hz, ray tracing, HDR and Tempest 3D audio, with the DualSense controller's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in the box. It runs the entire PS5 library and almost every PS4 game, and PS Plus adds a catalogue of games and online play.
The disc drive is detachable, two USB-C ports sit on the front, and the console lies flat on the included feet (a vertical stand is sold separately).
What reviewers say
Reviews treat the slim PS5 as the same console in a smaller box: identical performance, more storage and a design that fits more TV stands. The disc drive is the practical reason to pick this edition over the Digital Edition, since disc games are often cheaper and can be resold. Points against it are the still-chunky size, the horizontal feet replacing a proper stand (the vertical stand costs extra), and that anyone with an original PS5 has no reason to switch.
Pros
- Same performance as the original PS5 in a smaller, lighter box
- 1TB SSD instead of 825GB
- Disc drive keeps the option of cheaper and second-hand games
- Two front USB-C ports
Cons
- Still a large console by rivals' standards
- Vertical stand sold separately
- No upgrade for existing PS5 owners
