About the Sony PlayStation 5
The PlayStation 5 Pro is Sony's most powerful PlayStation: the same games as a standard PS5, but with a much bigger GPU so more of them can run at 60 frames per second without giving up the detail of their quality modes. Sony puts the GPU at 67% more compute units than the PS5, with 28% faster memory and rendering up to 45% faster, plus ray tracing that runs two to three times quicker.
The Pro also adds PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI upscaler that sharpens the picture on games patched to use it, and a 2TB SSD that holds roughly twice the games of a 1TB PS5. Games that take advantage are labelled "PS5 Pro Enhanced"; older PS5 and PS4 titles get Game Boost for steadier frame rates.
It is a digital console out of the box: there is no disc drive built in, though Sony's detachable Disc Drive can be added later. A DualSense wireless controller and a horizontal stand are in the box, and it supports 4K at 120Hz, 8K output, VRR, Wi-Fi 7 and Tempest 3D audio.
What reviewers say
Reviewers call the PS5 Pro the best-looking way to play PlayStation games: in supported titles its performance modes run at 60fps with close to quality-mode detail, and PSSR plus faster ray tracing give a cleaner, sharper image than the standard PS5. The criticisms are consistent too: it is expensive, the disc drive and vertical stand are sold separately, the improvement depends heavily on whether a game has a Pro patch, and PSSR produced visible artefacts in a few early games before patches. Most conclude it is for people who already want the best image on a 4K TV rather than a must-have upgrade.
Pros
- Noticeably sharper, smoother image in PS5 Pro Enhanced games, often 60fps with quality-mode detail
- Faster ray tracing and the PSSR upscaler improve many games without the player doing anything
- 2TB of storage out of the box
- Quiet, runs cool, and keeps the full PS5 library and accessories
Cons
- Expensive, and the disc drive and vertical stand are extra
- Gains vary by game; unpatched titles see smaller improvements
- PSSR showed artefacts in a few games at launch until developers updated them
