About the Sony PlayStation 5
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is Sony's all-digital PS5, designed for players who download their games instead of buying discs. It has no Blu-ray drive. The custom CPU, GPU and ultra-high-speed SSD with integrated I/O cut load times for installed PS5 games to near-instant.
On a 4K TV, supported games can use HDR for a richer range of color, and ray tracing for lifelike lighting, shadows and reflections. Compatible titles can run at up to 120fps with 120Hz output. The DualSense wireless controller has haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so you can feel the action, and 3D audio adds depth to the soundscape in supported games.
You can expand the storage with a compatible external USB drive, Wi-Fi is built in, and an HDMI cable is included. It's a good fit for gamers who are comfortable building a digital library and want the full PlayStation 5 experience in the living room.
What reviewers say
Reviewers praised the PS5 Digital Edition for its very fast SSD loading, smooth 4K performance and the DualSense controller's haptics and adaptive triggers, which Sony's own games make good use of. Apart from the missing drive, it is the same as the disc model. Criticism of the launch console focused on its very large size and on usable storage being smaller than advertised.
Pros
- Very fast SSD load times
- Smooth, high-quality 4K performance
- The DualSense controller adds real immersion
- Same performance as the disc model
Cons
- Large, bulky console
- Internal storage fills up quickly, with less usable space than advertised
- No disc drive for physical games or Blu-rays
